TREASURE at the 3rd Conference on Northern German Heat Research
The 3rd Conference on Northern German Heat Research took place in Bremen (Germany) on 10–11 September, bringing together researchers, industry experts, and policymakers to discuss the latest advancements in sustainable heating technologies.
Dr. Nikolai Strodel from the Hamburg Institut, a key partner in the TREASURE project, presented during the session on “Storage Technologies – Energy Storage.” His presentation focused on aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) for urban district heating, highlighting both opportunities and limitations of this approach.
Drawing on research from the OptInAquiFer project, as well as insights from ongoing work within SysGF, TREASURE, and other large-scale storage studies, Nikolai provided an overview of aquifer, tank, and pit storage systems. He emphasised that these storage systems, due to their very low standby losses, are particularly well-suited as long-term seasonal storage solutions and can remain economically competitive compared to other technologies.
We extend our thanks to the conference organisers for hosting this important exchange. The next edition of the event will be held in Flensburg, and we look forward to continuing the discussion on sustainable heat storage and decarbonisation of district heating.
