European Energy Innovation Magazine

The TREASURE project has been featured in the European Energy Innovation Magazine! This publication highlights innovative solutions for Europe’s energy transition. Our article showcases how TREASURE is advancing Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) to enable 100% renewable district heating networks. Learn how the project is developing large-scale PTES solutions, accelerating adoption across Europe, and ensuring sustainable, cost-effective energy storage.

A new era of district heating thinking?
Economic feasibility of implementing supra-regional connections of existing district heating networks

This article, published in the journal Energy, looks at how linking two existing district heating systems could save money and reduce emissions. The study found that such a connection could lower heating costs by over 16% and cut CO₂ emissions by 15% each year, showing a promising step toward more efficient and sustainable energy use.

Performance analysis of the Høje Taastrup water pit thermal energy storage

Researchers tested a new large-scale heat storage system in Høje Taastrup, designed to store and reuse heat efficiently over short periods of time. The system demonstrated strong performance, reusing up to 89% of the stored energy, and maintained stable temperature layers, similar to other successful systems. To work effectively at high temperatures, special materials are required that can withstand the heat. These results have been published in the Journal of Energy Storage.

Monitoring data of the Høje Taastrup water pit thermal energy storage

A new heat storage system in Høje Taastrup, Denmark, is helping supply Copenhagen with energy-efficient heating and is unique for its short-term heat storage cycle. It uses advanced materials and design to store and release heat over one to two weeks. Detailed data from its operation in 2024 is now freely available online in the Data in Brief scientific journal, helping researchers improve future energy systems and heating technologies.

Survey Highlights Key Trends and Challenges in Thermal Energy STORAGE

A recent survey by Hamburg Institut, conducted within the TREASURE project, gathered insights from heat storage initiatives in Denmark, France, Austria, Croatia, and China to support cities in implementing Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES). The findings highlight common strategies, like combining PTES with heat pumps, as well as key barriers such as permitting delays and varied financing models. These insights will feed into a new Implementation Guideline to help municipalities integrate large-scale thermal storage into urban heating systems.
