TREASURE at ICSMGE 2026

The TREASURE project was represented at the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE 2026), held from 14–19 June 2026 in Vienna, Austria, one of the world's leading events dedicated to geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics.

TREASURE partner GEO contributed to the conference through both a paper presentation and a poster presentation titled:

Temperature effects on geotechnical soil properties around pit thermal energy storages

The work was presented by Abdalla Mustafa Abdalla Almukashfi and addresses an important aspect of Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) development: understanding how elevated operating temperatures influence the properties and behaviour of surrounding soils.

The paper explores the thermo-mechanical behaviour of soils exposed to temperatures typically encountered in PTES systems and highlights the importance of considering temperature-dependent soil properties when designing, constructing, and operating large-scale thermal energy storage facilities.

The research also presents laboratory investigations carried out within the TREASURE project, contributing to a better understanding of geotechnical conditions that support the safe and efficient deployment of PTES technologies.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to share TREASURE results with the international geotechnical community and to exchange knowledge on challenges and innovations related to underground and large-scale energy infrastructure.
