TREASURE at Linz District Heating Forum 2026
The TREASURE project was actively represented at the Linz District Heating Forum 2026, held on 17–18 March at Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, and hosted by the Energieinstitut an der JKU Linz. The event brought together experts from across Europe to discuss district heating, large-scale thermal energy storage, and system integration in the context of the clean energy transition.
Strong TREASURE contribution
TREASURE partners contributed extensively to the programme, presenting insights from research, demonstration activities, and real-world applications of large thermal energy storage technologies.
On Day 1, presentations covered cross-sector cooperation, system integration, the economic impacts of district heating networks, and practical experiences with Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) projects across different European contexts.
Day 2 continued with contributions focused on future district heating systems, life cycle assessment, stakeholder perspectives, and technical insights from existing PTES installations. These sessions highlighted the importance of combining technical performance, economic viability, and stakeholder engagement to support the large-scale deployment of thermal energy storage.

Forum highlights and exchange
Over both days, the forum highlighted the role of large-scale thermal energy storage in enabling renewable and flexible district heating systems, as well as the importance of stakeholder cooperation, robust data and modelling, and the integration of innovative technologies into existing and future energy systems.
In addition to the technical programme, participants engaged in networking activities, including the welcome reception at the Ars Electronica Center, a joint dinner, and the closing farewell coffee and drinks. The event confirmed the growing relevance of PTES and other LTES technologies and demonstrated the value of knowledge exchange in advancing climate-neutral heating systems across Europe.
