September recap: Treasure in Flensburg and Rostock

In September, TREASURE partners participated in two events in northern Germany, presenting current research and practical developments in large-scale thermal energy storage to the research community and the wider public.

The 4th Conference of Northern German Heat Research

At the 4th Conference of Northern German Heat Research in Flensburg, TREASURE partner Hamburg Institut contributed to discussions on the heat transition and thermal storage. Kristina Schumacher presented research on modelling Pit Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) in MILP energy system models, focusing on how reheating can be incorporated to better represent storage temperatures.

The work was also presented in a new TREASURE poster, comparing different PTES modelling approaches and their influence on storage design and system performance.

The event brought together around 120 participants from the research community and provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge on current approaches to thermal energy storage and future heating systems.

Klima-Aktionstag Rostock

Later in September, TREASURE partner Hansestadt Rostock took part in Klima-Aktionstag Rostock, the closing event of Rostock Sustainability Week. The public event welcomed around 500 visitors and offered a programme of information stands, workshops, presentations and activities focused on climate protection, sustainability and the future development of the city.

As part of the programme, a presentation by Naska Wick and Uwe Hempfling introduced Rostock’s planned Pit Thermal Energy Storage, explaining the role seasonal heat storage can play in the city’s district heating transition. The presentation also introduced TREASURE and Rostock’s role as one of the project’s seven demonstrators, with a focus on project work related to site selection, financing and organisation, and the environmental impacts of large-scale PTES.

The September activities reflected two important aspects of TREASURE: advancing PTES research and supporting its practical implementation in district heating systems.
